One Year Homeless

Over a year ago my wife and I left our three bedroom home behind to live a life free of rent, or mortgage, in a tiny traveling home. We have spent the past year homeless, but we have never been without a home. We have traveled with very little money, but we have been so rich in experiences that there has not been any room to need more. This first year homeless has given us more of a sense of home than we have ever had before.

We started our travels from Jacksonville Florida. Our first real journey in our tiny van home took us up to Asheville and to travel around the blue ridge parkway. At this time we were living in our van, but still maintaining a full time job. We spent a week traveling before we returned to Florida for the holidays.

After the holidays we left Jacksonville again, this time heading south for the winter. We spent two months working our way down the west coast of the state and then back up the east coast after a week in the keys. We stopped in Jacksonville again to work on our van some and get ready for our next trip out.

This past time that we left home we traveled all around the Eastern United States, stopping frequently in cities that allow street performers to offer Tarot readings on the street as our means of making money. Letting fate guide our travel plans we went back to Asheville, Virginia Beach, Washington DC, Cincinnati OH, Cleveland OH, Vandalia IL, St Louis MO, Fayetteville AR, and so many other amazing places.

Along the journey we have met people that we will hold close to our heart and treasure for the rest of our lives. People who welcomed us into their homes and their families with open arms. We met people who opened up to us and helped us in a million ways. And among the people we have met, we have started to meet ourselves as well.

There is still so much of this country left to see, and the journey is still so young, but this past year without a house has given me more of a home than I could have ever imagined.
